Final Match ends in Draw - Sat. 20th. September
Nantyglo BC  64  Rhymney Royal BC  64

In this much-postponed West Mon. League game, Nantyglo BC kindly offered to switch venues due to the state of the Rhymney green thereby completing the West Mon. fixtures for both sides. The Royal bowlers had everything to play for since four points would see them gain third position in the West Mon. table whilst Nantyglo could themselves rise out the the bottom positions with a win. After a close fought game the homours were shared with a 64-64 draw and both sides picking up 7 points.
Two Royal rinks were successful with skip P. Bernard and his rink of D. Hann, G. Morris and D. Morgan gaining a 21-12 victory and skip K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, K.R. Evans, and P. White gaining a single shot victory at 17-16. Royal skips A. Jenkins and J. Watkins slipped to 14 - 17 and 12 - 19 defeats respectively. However the Royal bowlers gained the necessary points to finish a very creditable third position in the West Mon. league and bring the curtain down on what has been a very successful season for captain Neil James and his bowlers.

Royal Slip To Defeat In Friendly At Sunny Swansea
Swansea BC  101  Rhymney Royal BC  79

Rhymney Royal bowlers brought their season almost to a close with this friendly visit to Swansea and, whereas the result was not important, the friendships made and the welcome received will stay with everyone for a very long time. Five rinks in action in beautiful sunshine made a refreshing change from from what has been a very wet season. The hosts claimed the spoils by 3 rinks to 2 and by an overall aggregate 22 shots but all rinks were contested in an excellent spirit making an enjoyable experience for all bowlers.
Swansea skip John Jenkins and his bowlers always held the upper hand against the Royal's P. Cosh with captain N. James, R. Williams and G. Elias and built an early lead at 11 - 1 after 6 ends, extending to 19 - 11 after 16 ends before claiming a 26 - 15 win. In similar fashion the home rink of skip Steve Adams and his bowlers kept a tight grip on the visiting rink of skip J. Watkins, A. James, W. Dearth and D. Morgan again building steadily to register a 24 - 14 success. Royal skip K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, D. Lynch and P. White battled well against the home rink of skip David Thomas but could not hold and the home rink ran out 25 - 12 victors. The Rhymney Royal side were successful though on the remaining rinks. The mixed rink of skip A. Jenkins, A. Weaver, M. Patten and C. Patten opened up a  commanding 1 - 13 lead after 9 ends against  the home ink of skip Alan Jenkins and his bowlers. Although the home side fought back over the closing stages, the Royal bowlers were in uncompromising form and clinched a 14 - 21 victory.
The final rink in action saw Swansea skip Byron Mugford take on the Royal rink of skip D. Hann, G. Morris, N. Protheroe and J. Doyle in what turned out to be a close fought encounter. Very few shots were conceded as the lead switched from one side to the other. The visitors found themselves 1 - 3 up after 3 ends, 6 - 4 down after 6 ends and after 12 ends they held just a single shot advantage at 8 - 9. From here on in to the end of the game the Royal bowlers held on to claim a 12 - 17 success. Good bowling conditions, pleasant surroundings and fine comradeship on and off the green summed up a hugely successful day out for all concerned.

Royal Bowlers Pipped For Championship Title.-Sat 6th September 2008

Rhymney Royal bowlers worst fears materialised over the weekend when Six Bells BC beat Cwm BC by 13 pts to 1pt thereby overtaking Division 3 tabletoppers Rhymney Royal by one solitary point in an exciting climax to the Monmouthshire Bowling Association season.
Although unable to claim the title as champions they did secure promotion to Division 2 and can look forward to the many new challenges this brings including a meeting with Six Bells.

On the domestic front, the Rhymney Royal bowlers fell victims of the terrible weather over recent weeks and saw their Finals Day washed out with just three eagerly awaited competitions able to be completed on the day. The Idris Davies Rinks Trophy went to the successful rink of skip P. Bernard, J.C. Evans, W. Dearth and R. Williams who put in an inspired finish to claim the title 24 - 11 against D. Hann's rink after trailing by 6 - 8 after 9 ends. The Whitbread Two Woods Trophy was won by John Doyle who gained an impressive victory over Phil White. Doyle fought back from 2 - 6 down to register an emphatic 9 - 18 victory before the deluge came. One other final decided against all odds and played in worsening conditions was the Octavius Evans Club Champion Trophy contested between K.R. Evans and P. Bernard. Evans could not produce his reknowned bowling form in the wet conditions but Bernard remained consistent and claimed the trophy with some accurate deliveries on a waterlogged green. Other trophies decided but not on the day were the F. Maddocks Cup where D. Hann gained a close 21 - 18 win over P. Bernard; the D.I. Atkinson Pairs Trophy went to A. James and D. Morgan who ran out 31 - 6 winners against the J. Doyle/C. O'Brien pairing and the American Can Triples went to the J.C. Evans/I. Prosser/ D. Morgan combination who  beat C. Patten/G. Morris/D. Hann by 19 shots to 14.
* The Rhymney Royal Club would like to express their appreciation to the Caerphilly C.B.C. Park Ranger, Rod Davies, and the greenkeeper, John Morgan, for their help and assistance throughout the season.

Royal Season Ends On A High - Sat. 30th August 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  76  Beechwood BC  63

Division 3 leaders Rhymney Royal's MBA season ended with an excellent win against third placed Beechwood Bowling Club but they now have to sit it out as to whether they are promoted as champions as second-placed Six Bells have a game in hand but need thirteen points from it to overtake the Royal and claim the title.
The home side knew that they were in for a difficult match against determined visitors but the Royal bowlers were defending an unbeaten home record in this league and were equally determined not to relinquish it easily. The first rink to make an impression was that of skip A. Jenkins with A. James, K.R. Evans and D. Morgan up against Beechwood's Phil Rees. The home bowlers held off the challenge from the Newport rink to lead comfortably at 15 - 5 after 12 ends. This they extended to 20 - 5 before returning a assured 27 - 9 winning scorecard.
Skip J.C. Evans and his Royal rink of I. Prosser, R. Williams and C. O'Brien found themselves 9 - 10 down at midway in their tussle with Doug Spear and his bowlers. Both sides fought tenaciously for every shot with the home rink fighting back from a poor opening but they applied themselves better over the closing ends to again claim the points with a successful 20 - 18 score. A similar tight game was played out on the adjacent rink where Royal skip J. Watkins with D. Hann, W. Dearth and P. White battled it out against Beechwood's Dave Hill and his bowlers. The visitors held the opening ends to lead 6 - 8 after 9 before the home bowlers started to make any telling returns but a strong finish was needed and the home rink did not let the side down. They opened up a commanding 17 - 11 lead after 15 ends extending it to 20 - 12 before finally recording a 20 - 17 success. The Rhymney side did not have it all their own way as Beechwood's Bruce Carroll and his bowlers fought back from trailing 8 - 3 against Royal skip P. Bernard and his rink to register a fine 9 - 19 win and prevent the Rhymney side from claiming the maximum points they sought to claim the title of champions. Nevertheless, a 13 shots win and 12 league points with promotion secured and an unbeaten league home record in tact cannot be a bad return for an afternoon's efforts.

Promotion Beckons For Royal Bowlers - Tuesday 26th. August 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  89  Newbridge BC  70

With this emphatic win in their penultimate match of the season, Rhymney Royal bowlers are quietly confident that they have done enough to secure promotion to the Monmouthshire League Division 2 next season. Visitors Newbridge put up a battling performance but it was not enough against a determined home side who have gone through the season with their undefeated league home record intact with just one game to go, that being Beechwood on Saturday next.
The home side started well with skip K. Bartlett and his rink of T. Ryan, captain N. James and P. White establishing a 9 - 4 lead after 9 ends against the visiting rink of Terry Parker. The home bowlers continued to build up their shots extending their lead to 16 - 8 before settling for a comfortable 23 - 11 victory. Royal skip A. Jenkins with A. James, K.R. Evans and lead Des Morgan were in commanding form against Newbridge's skip Eddie Harding and his rink. The home side picked up a seven and a six as they raced to a resounding 31 - 17 winning scoreline in the gathering gloom. The third Royal rink skippered by P. Bernard and including D. Hann, R. Withers and J. Doyle worked tirelessly to keep the upper hand on the rink of Brian Porter and his bowlers. Despite being 5 - 7 down after 6 ends, the home side fought back to build a 15 - 10 lead after 12 ends before claiming a solid 23 - 17 victory. The visitors did have some success when their rink skippered by Malcolm Jones held off the challenge of Royal skip J. Watkins and his bowlers to register a 12 - 25 win thereby preventing a clean sweep by the home side. However, the twelve points picked up by the Rhymney side should prove enough to ensure their promotion to division 2 next season.

Rhymney Royal Win Last Wood Thriller - Sat. 23rd August 2008
Girlings BC  58  Rhymney Royal BC  65

Things are getting very tight at the top of Division 3 of the MBA League with four teams chasing the three promotion spots available and this contest brought together two of these teams and the match lived up to all expectations.
Rhymney Royal skip A. Jenkins with A. James, K.R. Evans and D. Morgan opened strongly against Girlings' skip John Baulch and his bowlers and quickly built up a useful 3 - 9 lead after 6 ends. The home rink settled and fought back to level at 11 - 11 before the visitors exerted the pressure with some fine bowling to register a 13 - 26 success. Likewise on the adjacent rink Royal skip J.C. Evans with his rink of I. Prosser, N. Protheroe and C. O'Brien always appeared in control against the home rink of Phil Watkins and his bowlers. The visitors built up their score steadily to register a good 9 - 20 win and a 24 shots aggregate advantage with two rinks remaining. But things don't always go to plan and Girlings' skip Huw Jenkins and his bowlers proved that by securing a hard earned 20 - 10 success against the visiting rink skippered by P. Bernard reducing the overall deficit to just 14 shots with one rink still to complete. Here the Rhymney Royal skip K. Bartlett with T. Ryan, N. James and P. White came up against the rink of the young and talented  Robert Jenkins and his bowlers. This turned out to be an exciting and nailbiting tussle with very little being given away by both sides. 3 - 3 after 6 ends and 7 - 7 after 12 ends showed how close this contest was developing over the early stages but the home bowlers started to build over the later stages and eat into the overall Royal shots advantage. On the last end of this tight contest the visitors were holding a single whilst the home rink needed six shots to win the overall match and held five second shots with just one wood left for both skips. Jenkins bowled an excellent last wood to remove the Royal's shot wood giving the home rink the necessary shots needed to claim victory but the Royal's Bartlett had other ideas. As cool as they come he stepped up to the mat and bowled a superb last wood to take out the shot wood and trickle his own wood onto the jack to give his side the overall match result. Despite suffering a 16 - 9 reverse on this last rink, the Rhymney Royal side gained the all-important victory and ten league points to put them joint top with Six Bells at the top of the division and an anxious week lies ahead with two remaining games to be played out to determine the outcome for next season.

Unbeaten Beaufort Clinch The Points - Weds. 21st August 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  62  Beaufort BC  66

Something had to give in this rearranged top of the table clash between unbeaten Beaufort and Rhymney Royal who are unbeaten at home in the leagues this season. It was unusual to see the sun shining on the sodden Park green for this exciting and long-awaited encounter  but the visitors opened strongly with skip Danny Davies Jnr building up an emphatic 6 - 10 lead against home skip P. Bernard and his rink of N. James, K.R. Evans and P. White at the midway point. This was extended to 8 - 14 and 11 - 16 before the home rink rallied late on and almost stole the contest but succumbed to a single shot defeat at 16 - 17. Visiting skip Martin Thomas also quickly built up an early lead at 6 - 16 against Royal skip D. Hann and his rink of G. Morris, R. Williams and D. Morgan. Although the home bowlers improved over the closing ends they could not pull back the deficit and fell to a 12 - 19 defeat. Home skip A. Jenkins with A. James, N. Protheroe and R. Withers worked hard to establish a 9 - 4 lead after 12 ends against Beaufort's Peter Williams and his bowlers but a dropped five shots brought the visitors back into the game and, with their confidence riding high, ran out 13 - 17 winners giving them their third successful rink of the evening. Despite being three rinks down the overall aggregate score still remained close for the fourth Royal rink skippered by J.C. Evans with T. Ryan, W. Dearth and J. Doyle were building up a steady advantage against Tommy Daniels and his bowlers. The home rink found themselves trailing by a single shot at 8 - 9 at midway but took a 12 - 10 lead after 12 ends before extending it to an emphatic 21 - 13 success giving the home side their solitary success of the evening but this proved not enough to prevent the visitors claiming a 4 shot aggregate win and 12 league points to take them deservedly to the top of the West Mon League. With just one game left against second placed RTB(Ebbw Vale), Beaufort are now in pole position to claim the honours leaving Rhymney Royal to ponder on what might have been!.

Finals Day Washout - Saturday 16th August 2008

The atrocious weather ruined what promised to be an excellent day for everyone at the club with just three finals being completed before the activities were abandoned.
The Idris Davies Rinks final took place with an early start before the deluge and brought together skip P. Cosh and his rink of J.C. Evans, W. Dearth and R. Williams against skip D. Hann with T. O'Brien, C. Patten and C. O'Brien. This contest was closely fought in the early stages with D. Hann and his bowlers holding a slender 8 - 6 lead after 9 ends but a disastrous few ends saw them drop nine shots to trail 8 - 15 and the deficit was to prove too much for the gallant bowlers. Skip Cosh and his merry men went on to claim the trophy with a resounding 11 - 24 victory.
Another final to be completed was the Whitbread Two Woods with John Doyle taking on Phil White over 21 ends. Again this was to prove a tight affair with very little being given away by both bowlers. White opened up an early 2 - 6 lead only for Doyle to pull it back and take a single shot advantage at 8 - 7 after 11 ends. Doyle hung on to his lead and extended it over the closing ends to register a good 18 - 9 win and claim the prize. Other finals started but had to be abandoned as the deluge flooded the green. In the American Can Triples Final the rink of D. Hann, G. Morris and C. Patten  hold a 5 - 0 lead after 3 ends against J.C. Evans, I. Prosser and P. White whilst  A. James and D. Morgan lead J. Doyle and C. O'Brien by 2 - 1 after 3 ends in the D.I. Atkinson Pairs Final. In the Octavius Evans Cup Final P. Cosh met K.R. Evans in torrential rain. It became clear that Ray Evans could not bowl anywhere near his best in such conditions and he conceded the tie at 0 - 18 giving P. Cosh the title of Club Champion for 2008.

Late Surge Wins It For Royal - Weds. 6th August 2008
Blaina BC  55  Rhymney Royal BC  76

In this close fought West Mon. league encounter, the visiting side Rhymney Royal left it until the closing ends to secure a fine 21 shots victory picking up twelve league points into the bargain. The weather looked menacing as both sides battled to gain the upper hand in the early stages with home skip Brian Reynolds and his bowlers opening up a 11 - 5 advantage against the Royal's D. Hann and his rink. This was extended to 16 - 6 before the visitors came alive and reduced the deficit to 2 shots at 18 - 16 as the threatening rain came down giving the home side their solitary win of the evening. Visiting skip A. Jenkins with his rink of K.R. Evans, G. Morris and P.White were made to work hard against the home rink skippered by Colin Wall. The visitors found themselves trailing after 6 ends at 5 - 2 but slowly and steadily built up the shots to gain a 12 - 17 result with some fine pressure bowling over the closing ends. In very similar fashion Royal skip P. Bernard with captain N. James, R. Withers and J. Doyle found themselves all square at 7 - 7 against the home rink of Bryn Russell but a late spate of accurate bowling saw them register a good 11 - 22 victory in the gathering gloom. The final contest saw Blaina's skip Derrin Cording and his bowlers up against the Royal rink skippered by "birthday boy" J.C. Evans with I. Prosser, N. Protheroe and D. Morgan. The home bowlers held a single shot lead at midway with a 9 - 8 score but the visitors battled well against equally determined home bowlers to gain the initiative over the closing ends and secure a 14 - 21 success. The Royal bowlers picked up 22 shots across the rinks over the final 3 ends whilst conceding just 4 shots giving them an aggregate 21 shots victory and a 12 - 2 points total for their evening's work.

Set-back For Leaders Rhymney Royal - Sat. 2nd Aug. 2008
Pontymister Welfare BC  73  Rhymney Royal BC  69

MBA Division 3 leaders Rhymney Royal tasted a narrow 4 shots defeat at lowly Pontymister Welfare who played an outstanding game of bowls which made a mockery of their league position. The result has again shaken up the positions in the league and a close run end of season is predicted for promotion and relegation.
Home skip Chris Twomey and his bowlers were the first to make their mark as they slowly and steadily built up the shots against visiting skip A. Jenkins' rink. The home side led 8 - 6 after 9 ends but extended this to 15 - 7 after 15 ends before claiming a 21 - 9 victory and two league points into the bargain. Likewise home skip Gordon Shipp and his rink extended a 12 - 10 lead after 9 ends into a winning 22 - 18 score against the Royal's P. Bernard and his bowlers to claim another two league points. With the visitors down on two rinks it was left to the Royal rinks skippered by J. Watkins and J.C. Evans to try and make amends and pull back the necessary shots to claim the game. Skip Watkins with T. Ryan, captain N. James and P. White found themselves in a close contest against Pontymister's John Langford and his bowlers. With the score at 8 - 8 after 9 ends the game could have gone either way but the determination of the visitors saw them take a 12 - 15 lead after 15 ends and battle through to a 15 - 19 winning scoreline against equally determined opponents. The final Royal rink saw skip J.C Evans with I. Prosser, N. Protheroe and C. O'Brien up against Ponty's Colin Williams and his bowlers. The visitors shot into a 1 - 10 lead after 6 ends and, at times, rode their luck to extend the score to 3 - 17 after 12 ends. With just 6 ends to play and leading 6 - 21 the visitors were coasting and they seemed to have gained the necessary shots to claim the aggregate advantage but the home bowlers had other ideas and put in some fine woods to pull back the score to 15 - 23 and stop the Rhymney side taking the game. With the home side picking up 10 league points and the visitors just 4 points it means that the issues of promotion and relegation will go down to the wire in this hotly contested division.

Royal's Response Is Emphatic Win - Sat. 26th. July 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  103  Rogerstone BC  61

Rhymney Royal bowlers responded in the best possible way following their humiliating defeat at Six Bells one week ago by putting Rogerstone to the sword in this MBA Division 3 fixture at their War Memorial Park green. The home side were in determined mood and swept the board by winning on all four rinks and claiming the maximum of 14 points available leaving the visitors to return home pointless.
Royal skip A. Jenkins  with his rink of C.O'Brien, K.R.Evans and A. James opening speedily and had built up a 13 shot lead without reply after 6 ends against Rogerstone's Wayne Tomkins. Although the visitors pulled back some shots over the second half of the contest they were no match for the home bowlers who registered a good 24 - 17 win. Visiting skip Andy Lee must still be wondering what happened as the 16 year old found his rink trailing 18 - 0 after just 6 ends against the home rink of skip P. Bernard with D. Hann, R. Withers and J. Doyle. The Royal bowlers were in unrelenting mood and ran out 36 - 15 with some fine bowling. On the adjacent rink was the youngster's grandfather in the shape of skip Keith Lee bowling against the Royal rink of skip J.C. Evans, J. Watkins, captain N. James and D. Morgan. The visitors battled well over the early ends but fell away as the game progressed only to see the home bowlers extend a 16 - 12 lead after 12 ends to a winning 27 - 15 scoreline. The closest contest of the afternoon saw Royal skip K. Bartlett and his rink of T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and P. White battling it out with Rogerstone's John Percival and his bowlers. Neither side gave much away with single shots being the order for the day as first the visitors getting a 1 - 3 advantage followed by a 5 - 5 score before the home side nudged into a 10 - 8 lead. Back came the visitors to lead 13 - 14 after 18 ends but the home bowlers claimed the spoils with a 16 - 14 win thanks to an accurate last wood from the home skip.
An exciting tussle on a perfect day for bowling saw the home side win by an aggregate 42 shots which keeps them very much in contention at the top of the Division 3 table.

Six Bells Toll For Royal Bowlers - Sat. 19th July 2008
Six Bells BC  96  Rhymney Royal BC  66

Unbeaten Division 3 leaders Rhymney Royal came down to earth with a huge bump in this enthralling contest against fast improving Six Bells and the result has shaken up the positions of both clubs at the top of the division 3 league table. Third placed Six Bells swept the board winning on all four rinks gaining the maximum points (14) on offer leaving the visitors to return home empty handed. Home skip Ray Taylor gained an emphatic 31 - 17 win against his Royal opponent A. Jenkins whilst his colleague in the form of skip Brian Line gained an equally impressive win against Royal skip K. Bartlett with a 25 - 13 victory. Although the remaining two rinks were much closer affairs, it was the determined bowling of the home side who took the honours with skip Mike Hart recording a 19 - 17 win against the Royal's J.C. Evans and Dean Webley securing a valuable triumph over the Royal rink skippered by P. Bernard with a 21 - 19 scoreline. A 30 shot aggregate win meant that the home side Six Bells now  overtake the previous league leaders at the top of the division and have set up what promises to be a close run-in over the remaining games of the season.

Good Win For Royal Bowlers - Weds. 16th. July 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  77  Brynmawr BC  61

Rhymney Royal welcomed the bowlers from Brynmawr to their War Memorial Park green for this West Mon League game played in good conditions after the soakings and postponements of recent weeks. The visitors opened strongly and showed an aggregate lead after 3 ends with all their rinks to the fore but the home bowlers settled and aided by some fine bowling pressed home their home advantage on three of the rinks. Royal skip P. Bernard with his rink of T. Ryan, R. Withers and J. Doyle pulled back from 1 - 3 down to lead at midway by 7 - 6 against P. Carey's bowlers. The home rink continued to build on their advantage and finished worthy winners at 20 - 14. Likewise fellow Royal skip K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, G. Morris and P. White pulled back an early deficit to lead 13 - 3 at midway against G. Congreve's men and went on to score a convincing 23 - 12 victory with some fine bowling. The third home rink of acting captain and skip A. Jenkins supported by D. Hann, K.R. Evans and C. O'Brien again found themselves trailing against Brynmawr skip R. Cooper but rallied to lead 10 - 5 before registering a 20 - 14 success. The only home rink to suffer a reverse was that of skip J.C. Evans and his bowlers who never recovered from an early score of 1 - 10 after 5 ends against I. Enson's men. The visitors extended their score to 5 - 14 before the home bowlers fought back to 12 - 14 only to see the visitors apply further pressure and return a 14 - 21 winning scoreline. Despite this hitch the home bowlers recorded a fine 16 shots aggregate win and a very useful 12 league points which keeps them in contention near the top in the West Mon table.

Royal Win Consolidates Top Spot - Sat. 12th July 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  92  Monmouth BC  70

Monmouth Bowling Club made the long journey to a sunny War Memorial Park for this MBA Division 3 game which brought together the only two sides still with unbeaten records and the clash lived up to all expectations. The home side were sitting proudly at the summit of their league with the visitors pressing hard to topple them but something had to give over the course of the afternoon.
The opening ends saw both sides feeling their way after the soakings endured over recent weeks but the visitors in the form of skip H. Anstey and his bowlers made the first telling break by opening up a 2 - 8 lead after 6 ends against the Royal rink of skip J. Watkins, I. Prosser, captain N. James and P. White. Try as they did the home rink battled bravely but could not quite get back into the contest and slipped to a 15 - 19 defeat. Home skip A. Jenkins with A. James, K.R. Evans and D. Morgan was involved in an intriguing contest against D. Stuart and his bowlers. The home rink established a 8 - 3 lead after six ends only to drop five shots on the seventh end and allow the visitors to draw level at 8 - 8. Consistent bowling over the remaining ends saw the home bowlers steadily build up their advantage before recording a good 25 - 12 victory. In much the same manner Royal skip P. Bernard with his rink of K. Bartlett, R. Withers and J. Doyle quickly built up a comfortable 9 - 2 lead after six ends but a disastrous seventh end saw the home rink drop seven shots allowing the visiting rink of skip P. Burke to pull level at 9 - 9. No more slip-ups though from the home bowlers as they settled into a good bowling routine building up the shots to register an emphatic 32 - 18 win. The final rink to finish was that of Royal skip J.C. Evans, T. Ryan, R. Williams and C. O'Brien against Monmouth's R. Green. The home rink seemed to be coasting to a comfortable win after 18 ends by holding a seven shots advantage at 20 - 13 but again a lapse of concentration saw them drop a six and two singles over the last three ends and lose the contest by 20 - 21. Nevertheless the home side registered another fine aggregate win by 22 shots, their sixth so far, and a further ten league points to add to their total.

West Mon Washout - Weds. 9th July 2008:

The game at Blaina fell victim of the heavy rain and has been postponed until a later date.

Royal Weather Storm To Record Fine Win - Sat. 5th. July 2008

Panteg Park BC  68  Rhymney Royal BC  102

Heavy rain and wind greeted unbeaten Rhymney Royal on their visit to Panteg Park for this MBA Division 3 game and in spite of the appalling conditions, the visitors registered their fifth consecutive league win of the season.
Royal skip John Watkins lead the way with a resounding victory against home skip P. Jannetta and his bowlers. Watkins, aided by I. Prosser, captain N. James and P. White, made light of the conditions to establish a 3 - 23 lead after 9 ends which they extended to 6 - 35 before ending with a 11 - 41 scoreline. In similar fashion, fellow Royal skip A. Jenkins with A. James, K.R. Evans and D. Morgan bowled steadily and well to lead 5 - 19 after 9 ends against Panteg's J.D. Lewis and his bowlers. In worstening weather there was no stopping the visitors as they went on to record a fine 11 - 38 win. But the visitors did not have it all their own way as Panteg Park showed determined resistance on the remaining two rinks. Home skip John Berry was always in control against the Royal rink skippered by J.C. Evans and built upon an early 7 - 5 lead to extend to 15 - 6 before claiming a 23 - 9 success. Likewise home skip R. Jones finished with a flourish to turn around from being 10 - 11 down after 15 ends to win by 23 - 14 against the Royal's P. Bernard and his bowlers. Another good win and ten points for the Royal bowlers to consolidate their position at the top of Division 3 but the weather ruined what could have been a fine bowling experience.

Close Call for Visitors in Cup Game - Fri. 4th July 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  61   RTB (Ebbw Vale) BC  70

"A good big one will always beat a good little one" as the saying goes was very true of this enthralling 3rd round Monmouthshire Knock-Out Cup game at a wet and windy War Memorial Park where the home Division 3 side entertained the star studded Division 1 side of RTB (Ebbw Vale). The host club had the distinction of sharing the rinks at 2 - 2 and even leading their more illustrious opponents at the halfway stage by 33 - 30 but the experience of the visiting bowlers came through over the final few ends to secure a hard fought victory.
Royal skip A.Jenkins with his rink of C. Patten, captain N. James and D. Hann held the visiting rink of Welsh International and skip Steve Harris at 4 - 4 but slowly lost their grip on a close game to lose 11 - 22 whilst fellow home skip K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, W. Dearth and D. Lynch similarly lost out to ex-Park bowler and International J.K. Evans and his rink by a 12 - 26 scoreline. The other two Royal rinks fared much better, recording fine victories against experienced bowlers. Home skip J.C. Evans with T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and P. White bowled consistantly to gain an excellent win with a 19 - 12 score against Welsh International Robert Price and his bowlers and Royal skip P. Bernard with J. Watkins, R. Withers and J. Doyle did just as well against Roger Silcox's bowlers in recording a well earned 19 - 10 success. Although sharing the rinks, the visitors went through with a 9 shot winning aggregate score but they knew that they had been in a close tussle against a determined home side.

West Mon Game Washed Out - Weds 2nd July 2008

The Royal's home game against Beaufort became a victim of the unseasonal weather when torrential rain flooded the War Memorial Park green forcing the game to be abandoned with just two ends being played.

Royal Win Top Clash - Sat 28th June 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  85  Standard BC  61

The top two unbeaten sides in the M.B.A. Division 3 came together in this exciting clash at the War Memorial Park and the match lived up to all expectations. Even the weather stayed dry for a fine exhibition of bowling from both sides.
Royal skip A. Jenkins with his rink of A. James, K.R. Evans and D. Morgan opened impressively against the visiting rink of skip Brian Foxall gaining a 8 - 2 advantage after 6 ends which they steadily built upon to 21 - 7 before registering a 26 - 11 success setting an example for the other rinks to follow. Home skip J.C. Evans with T. Ryan, R. Williams and C. O'Brien did just that against Standard's Roger Simms and his bowlers although the visitors made them work hard for their success. Holding a single shot lead at 6 - 7 after 6 ends, the visitors slowly capituated over the remaining ends and, in the face of some fine bowling from the home skip, succumbed to a 25 - 11 reverse giving the Royal their second rink success. The other rinks were much closer affairs with Standard skip Keith Skidmore and his rink involved in a tight game against the home rink of skip K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, captain N. James and P. White. Again the home bowlers found themselves trailing by single shots at 8 - 9, then 11- 12 and 14 - 15 before slipping to a 15 - 20 scoreline at the end earning the visitors their only win of the contest. The final rink to finish was that of the Royal's P. Bernard against the rink of Ian Gallad and a real tussle this turned out to be. The home rink which included J. Watkins, R. Withers and J. Doyle bowled accurately but their efforts were matched by the visitors as the scoreline moved from 5 - 5 to 11 - 11 to 14 - 14 after 15 ends. The visitors picked up 4 shots on the 16th end to lead 18 - 14 and the contest looked over but the Royal bowlers had other ideas and produced a storming fightback to draw the rink at 19 - 19 - a fair result for the high standard of bowling on show. The result showed a 24 shot win for the Royal, picking up 11 points in the game which lifts them to the summit of the Division 3 league and sets them in good stead for their battles in the week to come against Beaufort (West Mon) and RTB in the MBA Knockout Cup.

Defeat Costs Royal Bowlers Dearly - Weds 25th June 2008
Abertillery BC  70  Rhymney Royal BC  68

On a difficult bowling surface, possibly one of the worst in the West Mon area, Rhymney Royal bowlers slipped to a narrow two shots defeat which will have a telling effect on their position within the West Mon League. Full credit to the home side who adapted better to the green and took 12 points from the game.
The opening six ends of this West Mon encounter were quite extraordinary with the home rink of skip Gareth Watts opening up a 18 - 1 lead against the Royal's A. Jenkins only to see his fellow skip Richard Cook on the adjoining rink slump to a 0 - 19 score against visiting skip P. Bernard's bowlers. The rink of A. Jenkins made some amends over the closing ends by reducing the score to 27 - 14 whilst skip P. Bernard with D. Hann, R. Withers and J. Doyle ran out convincing 9 - 29 winners. The other rinks were much closer affairs with Royal skip J. Watkins with A. James, W. Dearth and D. Lynch pulling back from 9 - 1 down to come within 2 shots at 15 - 13 against Wyndham Davies' bowlers. Royal skip J.C. Evans was having a real battle against Gethin Hucker's bowlers. The visitors held the lead until the 15th end when the home rink gained a 13 - 12 advantage and, with the aggregate scores very close, the home bowlers earned four shots on the last end to gain a 19 - 12 win but, more importantly, the match at 70 - 68. A haul of 12 league points for the home side and just 2 points for the visitors will dent the Royal's hopes of remaining near the summit of the West Mon Championship.

Royal Win Cup Classic - Sat. 21st June 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  69  Croesyceiliog BC  55

Rhymney Royal welcomed Division 1 side Croesyceiliog Bowling Club to a wet and windy War Memorial Park for this second round match in the MBA Knock-Out Cup competition and in true cup match tradition it turned out to be a keenly fought contest with the weather being a good leveller.
Royal skip A. Jenkins with R. Williams, captain N. James and A. James found themselves up against the visiting rink of Roger Berry and containing former Rhymney man and ex-international E.A John. The early ends were close knit as each side probed for the openings and after 9 ends the home rink had edged into a 10 - 8 lead. This they developed into a commanding 21 - 9 position before triumphing with a 24 - 14 scoreline.Likewise fellow Royal skip K. Bartlett and his rink of I. Prosser, W. Dearth and P. White quickly established a 11 - 3 advantage against Croesyceiliog's Kevin Jones and his bowlers. This was extended to 18 - 6 before winning with a 19 - 9 total. The other two rinks were involved in real tussles with the lead constantly changing hands throughout the contest. Royal skips J.C. Evans and P. Bernard both lost narrowly at 15 - 16 and 11- 16 respectively against the visiting rinks of Gary Sutherland and Tony Hine, with Sutherland rescuing his rink on many occasions with his last wood. Although the rinks were shared at 2 - 2 it was the Royal who claimed the spoils with a 14 shot aggregate win and a place in the next round of the competition.

Measured Success For Royal Bowlers - Weds 18th June 2008
Rhymney Royal BC  60  Six Bells BC  59

We often hear of matches going to the wire but this West Mon league game went to the tape - the measuring tape to be more accurate. Full credit to both sides who played out this encounter in appalling weather conditions with heavy showers adding to a saturated War Memorial Park green. The weather was a great leveller but home skip P. Bernard with his rink of J. Doyle, R. Withers and D. Hann made light work of it in their game against visiting skip Mike Hart. The home rink quickly established a 11 - 1 lead after just 6 ends which they extended to 15 - 5 before securing an excellent 23 - 13 success with some well controlled bowling on a difficult rink. Royal skip J.C. Evans and his rink of T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and C. O'Brien found themselves 13 - 4 up after 12 ends but had to endure a steady fight back from skip Dean Webley over the closing ends before winning 15 - 11. Six Bell's skip Ray Taylor pulled back from being 9 - 4 down against the Royal's A. Jenkins and his bowlers to register a hard earned 14 - 17 success. The final rink to complete their allotted 18 ends was that skippered by the Royal's K. Bartlett with I. Prosser, W. Dearth and P. White assisting against the visiting rink of Tim Phelps. The visitors were always in command and established a 3 - 10 lead at midway. This they extended to 4 - 17 with just 3 ends remaining and although the home rink had no chance of winning this particular contest, their result was important to the overall aggregate score. With this aggregate score all square at 59 - 59 on the last end, it required the measuring tape to determine the nearest wood in the final head which to the delight of home skip K. Bartlett and his fellow Royal bowlers went in his favour bringing to a close a highly competitive match giving the home side a further 10 points to keep on the pressure at the top of the West Mon league.

MBA Run Continues With Another Fine Victory - Sat. 14th June 2008

Llanhilleth BC  74  Rhymney Royal BC  80

Unbeaten after their opening two matches in the MBA Division 3, the Royal bowlers made their second visit of the season to Llanhilleth BC where they knew a result would be hard to come by having won their previous match on their green by 11 shots. This MBA contest lived up to expectations with the result not decided until the last end. Royal skip J.C. Evans and his rink of T. Ryan, P. White and C. O'Brien bowled steadily throughout their match against skip Brian Green and his bowlers opening up a 6 - 9 lead after 9 ends extending it to 9 - 17 after 15 before securing a 16 - 24 success. Royal acting captain and skip A. Jenkins with D. Hann, K.R. Evans and R. Williams held a single shot advantage after 12 ends at 11 - 12 against Lee Bowen's bowlers but could not sustain it and slipped to a 21 - 17 defeat dropping two lots of three shots over the last few ends. Visiting skip J. Watkins' luck continues to desert him as his rink succumbed to another defeat against Llanhilleth's Mike Blanche and his bowlers. The visitors found themselves 13 - 5 down after 12 ends but could not make any inroads into the home rinks lead and suffered another 21 - 12 reverse. The last rink to finish was that of Royal skip P. Cosh with K. Bartlett, C. Patten and J. Doyle in battle against Tom Tranter and his men. With the aggregate score showing in favour of the home side, it took a strong finish by the visitors to move from 16 - 16 after 18 ends to claim 11 shots over the last 3 ends and record a 16 - 27 win giving the Royal a 6 shot aggregate victory at 74 - 80 and the 10 MBA league points that go with it.

Royal Pipped In Top Of The Table Clash - Weds. 11th June 2008

RTB (Ebbw Vale) BC  69  Rhymney Royal BC  60

Rhymney Royal bowlers made the short journey to Ebbw Vale looking to consolidate their position at the top of the West Mon League but found the home side, with their galaxy of stars, in uncompromising form. Had the visitors just a small dose of luck then perhaps the result could have been different but a win has to be earned! Royal skip P. Cosh with K. Bartlett, captain N. James and J. Doyle appeared to be well in control against international R. Price and his bowlers. 9 - 14 up after 15 ends and the result seemed a foregone conclusion but 9 shots picked up whilst conceding just a single by the home rink almost cost the visitors dearly but they held on to win at 14 - 15. Likewise visiting skip A. Jenkins with D. Hann, R. Withers and R. Williams hung on over the final few ends to establish a 18 - 19 victory over RTB's R. Silcox and his bowlers. A fascinating contest took place on rink 6 where Royal skip J.C. Evans and his father K.R. Evans together with T. Ryan and D. Morgan were up against the home rink skippered by brother J.K. Evans and his bowlers. No family favours this time as J.K. stormed into an impressive 15 - 4 lead at midway only to see the visitors pull back to 16 - 14 with 3 ends to go but four shots picked up on the 16th end put paid to any thoughts of a Royal win as they went down 20 - 16. The last  Royal rink skippered by J. Watkins with A. James, I. Prosser and P. White suffered another defeat against the RTB rink of P. Haydon. The home bowlers took an early lead at 9 - 3 at midway and cruised through to a comfortable 17 - 10 success. Although the rinks were shared at 2 - 2, it was the home side who picked up the winning points with a nine shots aggregate victory at 69 - 60 leaving the visitors to rue over a missed opportunity to regain top spot in the West Mon league.

Royal Win Close Encounter - Sat. 7th. June 2008

Rhymney Royal BC  77  Cwm Welfare BC  69

The fixture list brought together these two sides for the third time already this season with the Royal having won the previous two but when MBA league points are at stake, Cwm bowlers often rise to the occasion and this match was no different. Rhymney Royal skip J.C. Evans with his rink of T. Ryan, K.R. Evans and lead D. Morgan found themselves trailing by a single shot after 12 ends to the visiting rink of skip D. Williams. They trailed even further after 15 ends showing a deficit of 14 - 17 but the last six ends brought 13 shots to the home rink whilst they conceded just a single to give them an emphatic 27 - 18 success. Home skip P. Cosh with K. Bartlett, C. Patten and J. Doyle were equally successful against Cwm's Richie Price and his bowlers. The home men were always in control and registered a good 22 - 14 victory. Not so successful was the rink skippered by the Royal's A. Jenkins, supported by D. Hann, W. Dearth and R. Williams. They found it a real tussle against the visiting rink of Justin Prior. The visitors appeared to be able to keep their noses in front throughout the close fought match resulting in a four shot win at 14 - 18. Royal skip John Watkins with A. James, captain N. James and P. White opened up an early advantage against Dai Badcock's bowlers but they could not sustain the pressure and fell to a 14 - 19 defeat. With the rink honours shared at 2 - 2 and an aggregate score of 77 - 69, the Royal side realised just how close the game was but it meant 10 useful points for the home side and another WIN for their efforts - the third against the same opposition this season.

Royal Bowlers Open Account With Impressive Win - Sat. 31st May 2008

Crickhowell BC  57  Rhymney Royal BC  93

This opening fixture of the Monmouthshire League Division 3 brought together two sides who have had contrasting fortunes over recent weeks with the Rhymney bowlers being eliminated from the Carruthers Shield whilst their opponents Crickhowell have progressed comfortably to the knockout stages of the same competition so an intriguing battle lay in store with the sides having only met in a friendly on a previous occasion. The home side opened strongly and adapted quickly to establish a 22 - 10 aggregate lead after 6 ends with only the rink of Royal skip J.C. Evans making any impression holding a narrow 4 - 6 advantage against his opposing skip Phil Reed and his bowlers. But things can change rapidly in a game and this contest was no exception and by the 12th end the Royal bowlers had opened up an impressive 30 - 48 aggregate score with some sublime bowling across all four rinks. Evans and his rink of T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and C. O'Brien had built up a 7 - 17 lead which they extended to 10 - 27 before registering a resounding 11 - 34 win. Equally impressive was the Royal rink of skip P. Bernard, K.R. Evans, W. Dearth and C. Patten who turned an early deficit of 9 - 5 into an excellent 13 - 25 victory against home skip Peter Stahl and his bowlers. Not to be outdone by his team-mates, Royal skip A. Jenkins with his rink of D. Hann, R. Withers and R. Williams found themselves sharing the spoils at 5 - 5 after 9 ends in their battle against Crickhowell's Tim Rees but unhurried, consistent bowling saw the visitors gain a 10 - 20 victory. The closest contest of the afternoon saw the Royal rink skippered by J. Watkins come up against the home rink of Stephen Toms. The lead constantly changed hands throughout this game and saw the score at 13 - 13 after 15 ends. The visitors were hoping to follow the example being set by their colleagues on the other rinks but Toms and his bowlers applied the pressure over the closing ends to gain a solitary home rink success at 23 - 14. A 36 shots aggregate win for the Rhymney bowlers and 12 points away from home in their first fixture will hopefully set them up for further success in this challenging Monmouthshire League.

Royal Bowlers Top West Mon League - Thursday 29th May 2008

Congratulations to the Rhymney Royal bowlers who sit proudly at the top of the West Mon. League despite having last night's game against Nantyglo cancelled due to a waterlogged green. Let's keep it going?

Royal Win In Vain - Sat. 24th May 2008

Rhymney Royal BC  83  Cwm Welfare BC  65

Cwm Welfare bowlers made the journey to Rhymney Royal's War Memorial Park green knowing that only a win would be sufficient to keep alive their aspirations of qualifying from the group stages of this season's WBA Carruthers Shield tournament whereas the hosts only had their pride at stake having lost all chance of further progress by losing their two previous games in the competition. The visitors opened strongly with captain and skip Justin Prior leading the way against the Royal skip K. Bartlett and his rink. Prior built up a 6 - 9 lead after 9 ends only to see the home side hit a purple patch over the next seven ends and place themselves in a good position at 16 - 11. But the Cwm bowlers put in a strong finish picking up ten shots whilst only conceding a single to gain an important 17 - 21 success. Royal skip A. Jenkins and his rink were always playing catch-up against the Cwm rink skippered by Dai Badcock. The Cwm bowlers opened up a 7 - 14 lead at midway and remained in control until the end where they established a well-earned 14 - 19 result. The home rink of skip P. Cosh, K.R. Evans, C. Patten and J. Doyle picked up a six on the third end in their match against Cwm's J. Williams and his bowlers and it provided the springboard for them to go on and complete the job with a 26 - 13 scoreline with some fine bowling. The final Royal rink of skip J.C. Evans with T. Ryan, N. James and C. O'Brien had an early scare against the visiting rink of D. Williams. The home bowlers found themselves at 5 - 5 after 6 ends but soon shook themselves into action to steadily build up the shots in creating a winning 26 - 13 score. Although the rinks were shared at 2 - 2 it was the home side who claimed the game with an eighteen shot aggregate winning margin and denied the Cwm Welfare bowlers the opportunity of making it into the knockout stages of this prestigious competition.

Further Success For Royal Bowlers - Weds. 21st. May 2008

Llanhilleth BC  52.25  Rhymney Royal BC  64

Llanhilleth and District played host to Rhymney Royal in this West Mon. League fixture and found the visitors in determined form gaining a narrow victory by some 8 aggregate shots (11.75 on adjustment) on an excellent playing surface offering plenty of swing on both hands. Having already defeated the hosts earlier in the season, the Royal bowlers were well aware of the danger of complacency against a side who always seem to bowl well at home and this match was no different. Llanhilleth skip Brian Green was involved in a close game against Royal skip K. Bartlett and his bowlers with the lead constantly changing hands. The home rink built up a 6 - 2 lead after 6 ends only to find themselves trailing at 9 - 6 after 9 ends. The home side fought back to establish a 14 - 10 advantage with 3 ends to go but the visitors did enough over the remaining ends to share the spoils at 14 - 14. Not so fortunate was Royal skip P. Cosh against the home rink skippered by Mike Blanche. Despite playing with a man short the home rink took the lead after the opening ends and held on to secure a 15 - 11 win which on adjustment showed the narrowest of wins at 11.25 - 11. Home captain and skip Tom Tranter came up against Royal skip A. Jenkins and his bowlers and found the visitors in good form. They opened up a 0 - 5 lead after the opening ends and pressed home their advantage to lead 6 - 11 at midway before extending it to a 14 - 17 winning score. The remaining Royal rink of skip J.C.  Evans with T. Ryan, C. Patten and C. O'Brien were involved in a close fought battle with Llanhilleth's Lee Bowen and his bowlers. Very little separated the sides after 12 ends with the visitors holding a narrow 10 - 12 lead but the visitors put in a strong finish to win 13 - 22 with some big scores over the closing ends. Two rinks to one win with the other drawn in favour of the visitors translated into a further 11 points to add to their impressive start to the season for the Rhymney Royal bowlers in the West Mon. League

Royal Hopes Dashed By Llanwern - Sat. 17th. May 2008

Llanwern BC  75  Rhymney Royal BC  63

Rhymney Royal hopes of making progress in this year's  Carruthers Shield tournament were all but ended with this 4 rinks defeat to Llanwern on a heavy and unpredictable bowling surface.Although the visitors battled hard to get into the game, the home sides familiarity with the playing surface paid dividends as they claimed the spoils by a twelve shots aggregate winning margin. Royal skip P. Cosh and his rink of K.R. Evans, captain N. James and J. Doyle battled well against home skip A. Smith and his bowlers. Picking up 7 shots on the 10th end put the visitors into the lead but they could not hold it over the closing ends and slipped to a 21 - 18 reverse. In similar fashion Royal skip A Jenkins with his rink of D. Hann, P. White and R. Williams shared the score at 12 - 12 after 15 ends against Llanwern's D. Barnes but again they could not hold on the long jacks and succumbed to a 18 - 14 defeat. Home skip B. Gatehouse was involved in a real tussle with the Royal's K. Bartlett and his bowlers. With the scores tied at 8 - 8 after 12 ends the home rink picked up the required shots over the final ends to secure a hard earned 16 - 13 win. The final Royal rink skippered by J.C. Evans with C. O'Brien, I. Prosser and J. Watkins found themselves 17 - 9 down after 16 ends against the home rink of M. Perrett but although the visitors picked up 7 shots on the last two ends it was not enough to overhaul the home score and they suffered a 20 - 18 defeat to complete a miserable afternoon's bowling which effectively ended their interest in this year's competition. Full credit to the home side who battled well across all rinks to gain their two points which keeps alive their aspirations.

Royal Maintain Impressive Start

Rhymney Royal BC  66  Ebbw Vale Welfare BC  51 - Weds 14th May 2008

Rhymney Royal bowlers maintained their impressive start to the season with this hard earned victory against a plucky Ebbw Vale Welfare side at the War Memorial Park. The match started in warm, sunny conditions but ended with a chilly breeze making for uncomfortable bowling conditions. Visiting skip John Ridley opened well against the home rink of skip J. Watkins with I.Prosser, captain N. James and C. O'Brien leading at mid way with a 6 - 8 scoreline but the home rink applied themselves better over the closing ends with some fine bowling to create a 16 - 13 win. In similar fashion, Ebbw Vale's skip Ron Hayward and his bowlers led the home rink of P. Cosh with K.R. Evans, C. Patten and J. Doyle by a single shot at 9 - 10 after 12 ends but again the home rink came good over the remaining ends to seal a 19 - 13 victory. Royal skip A. Jenkins made a welcome return to the green with a well earned victory over the visiting rink of skip Jeff. Short. The home rink which included T. Ryan, P. White and R. Williams led throughout the game building upon their early 7 - 2 lead to extend to 14 - 8 before registering a 17 - 11 success. The remaining Royal rink skippered by K. Bartlett with A. James, N. Protheroe and D. Morgan was involved in a real tussle with skip Colin Salkeld and his bowlers. The visitors led 2 - 8 after 6 ends and 10 - 11 after 12 ends before the home rink took the lead and held it until the last end. With the score poised at 14 - 13 to the home side, the visitors held three shots before the final wood of the game by K. Bartlett reduced it to a single and a final scoreline of 14 - 14. A 15 shots aggregate win with three rinks won and one rink drawn gave the Royal bowlers 13 more points to add to their West Mon. league total.

Rhymney Royal Gain First Win In Shield - Sat. 10th May 2008

Rhymney Royal BC  85  Llanhilleth BC  57

Llanhilleth were the visitors to the War Memorial Park for the Royal's first home game in the WBA Carruthers Shield group match. Having narrowly lost their opening group match the previous week, the home side were looking for home advantage to play its part in securing a win but a spirited Llanhilleth side, short of two bowlers, had other ideas. The visitors opened strongly and after 9 ends found themselves leading by 2 rinks to 1 with the other tied at 9 - 9. Royal skip J.C. Evans with I. Prosser, captain N. James and C. O'Brien found themselves trailing by a single shot at 5 - 6 against skip Lee Bowen's bowlers. The deficit widened to 10 - 17 after 15 ends before the home rink succumbed to a 16 - 21 defeat. Fortunately for the home side, on adjustment the final score turned into a 16 - 15.75 victory since they were against a three man visiting rink. Llanhilleth captain and skip Tom Tranter found himself with a man short against home skip J. Watkins with his rink of T. Ryan, P. White and R. Williams and struggled to gain any momentum against the home sides' accurate bowling. After 9 ends the home rink had opened up a 13 - 4 lead which they extended to 23 - 6 after 15 ends before gaining a comprehensive 28 - 11 victory made even more emphatic by the 28 - 8.25 adjustment. Returning Royal skip K. Bartlett and his rink of A. James, R. Withers and D. Morgan were made to work hard for their success against Llanhilleth's Brian Green and his bowlers. 9 - 9 after 9 ends became 14 - 12 after 15 ends before the home rink gained that important 20 - 18 advantage to secure the win. The fourth home rink of skip P. Cosh, K.R. Evans, N. Protheroe and J. Doyle trailed the bowlers of skip Mike Blanche for most of the match until the 17th end when 5 shots dropped by the visitors enabled the home side to pull back to 14 - 14. A further 3 shots picked up on the 18th end gave the home rink the advantage at 17 - 14 and they did not look back as they secured a 21 - 15 win in an exciting contest. A 28 shot aggregate difference  and a fortunate 4 - 0 rinks victory earned the Royal side their first 2 points for a win in their Carruthers Shield group.

Royal Bag Maximum Points - Weds. 7th. May 2008

Cwm Welfare BC  49  Rhymney Royal BC  98

Rhymney Royal opened their West Mon. league account with a maximum haul of 14 points against a much changed Cwm side. The clubs are no strangers to each other and will meet four times this season in cup and league fixtures but this first meeting belonged very much to the visitors. Visiting skip J.C. Evans with his rink of C. O'Brien, C. Patten and I. Prosser opened strongly building up a rapid 3 - 15 advantage after 6 ends against Cwm's Justin Prior. The Royal bowlers continued to add misery to the hosts by steadily adding to their advantage with some fine bowling to run out 6 - 29 winners. In similar fashion Royal skip K.R. Evans followed his son's example and aided by A. James, W. Dearth and P. White established a commanding 10 - 19 lead after 12 ends against the home rink skippered by Charlie Jones. Again the visitors pressed home their advantage to claim a 13 - 24 victory. Cwm skip Dai Badcock and his bowlers held a useful lead of 8 - 3 after 6 ends against the Royal rink with P. Cosh as skip but five shots dropped on the eighth end saw the visitors take the lead 8 - 10 and surge away to hold at 9 - 17 after 12 ends before extending it to a winning 13 - 23 scoreline. Royal skip J. Watkins with his rink of J. Doyle, R. Withers and D. Morgan found their game against Cwm's Richie Price and his bowlers a much tighter affair. At mid way the scores were level at 10 - 10 but the visitors dug deep to slowly build up the shots to 12 - 16 before extending to a winning 17 - 22 score giving the Rhymney Royal bowlers a clean sweep of the rinks with a 14 points maximum and a 49 shot winning margin in this first West Mon. fixture of the season.

First Match Defeat in Carruthers Shield - Sat. 3rd May 2008

Pontyfelin BC  75   Rhymney Royal BC  72

Monmouthshire Division 3 Champions Pontyfelin Bowling Club played host to Rhymney Royal in this WBA Carruthers Shield Group match which resulted in a very close game decided on the last end. The home side remained unbeaten in the league last season whilst the visitors were relegated from Division 2 so an intriguing battle was in store. The home rink with skip Ray David to the fore opened up a useful 7 - 3 lead after 6 ends against the Royal skip J.C. Evans and his bowlers but continued pressure by the visitors saw them gain a 9 - 10 advantage after 12 ends which they extended to a winning 14 - 19 at the end with some good accurate bowling. Not so fortunate was Royal skip D. Hann with J. Doyle, C. Patten and D. Morgan who came up against home captain and skip Mike Banks and his bowlers. The visitors found themselves trailing 19 - 6 after 15 ends but a spirited fight back over the closing ends was not enough to close the gap entirely and they went down 25 - 15. In similar fashion the Royal's K.R. Evans and his rink of A. James, W. Dearth and R. Withers found the going tough against Pontyfelin skip Glyn Parry's rink. The visitors trailed throughout before suffering a 21 - 13 reverse. The last rink to finish was that of Royal skip P. Cosh with his rink of T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and R. Williams against Mansel Young's bowlers. In a close battle with neither side giving up shots easily the visitors had the edge throughout the game and built up their lead steadily by usually single shots. They held the advantage at 9 - 17 after 15 ends and, with two ends to go, they needed to score six to claim the aggregate win. Although they picked up 4 shots on the penultimate end, the home rink were in no mood to concede defeat and twice moved the jack on the final end to claim a single shot win. Despite going down 15 - 25 on the rink, Pontyfelin claimed the spoils with a winning 75 - 72 aggregate score in what had been a very exciting contest between two evenly matched sides.

Royal Success in Final Friendly - Thursday 1st May 2008

Cross Keys Welfare B C  62   Rhymney Royal B C   64

Rhymney Royal bowlers made a welcome return to the Waun Fawr Park where 1st. Division Cross Keys Welfare played host in this friendly encounter to bring to an end their early season  warm-up matches before cup and league games start and the visitors gained a narrow 2 shot victory for their efforts. The fact that the rinks were shared at two rinks each showed the closeness of the game with the hosts making a late surge to almost snatch the result. Home skip Russell Bryant gained the most emphatic win of the evening against the Royal's Julian Evans and his bowlers. After six ends the visitors were leading 3 - 6 but that marked the end of their scoring as the home rink surged away with some fine bowling to register a 24 - 6 victory. Royal skip D. Hann with his rink of G. Morris, captain N. James and R. Withers found themselves 15 - 3 down at mid way against Andrew Bushell and his bowlers but dug deep into their resources to fight back over the second half to come within a single shot only to see victory elude them at 17 - 16. The other two visiting rinks registered more defined wins with the Royal's skip A. Jenkins and his rink of R. Evans, W. Dearth and J. Doyle building the shots up steadily to record an excellent 6 - 21 win against the experienced Norman Bushell's bowlers. The remaining rink saw the Royal skip P. Cosh with T. Ryan, N. Protheroe and R. Williams hold off a late comeback from the home captain and skip Simon Bushell and his bowlers to gain a 15 - 21 success meaning that the rinks were shared but the aggregate victory going to the visitors who remain unbeaten at this stage of the season.

Friendly Win For Royal - Sat. 26th April 2008

Blaina B C   74   Rhymney Royal B C   100

Blaina Bowling Club played hosts to Rhymney Royal in this hastily arranged friendly fixture played over five rinks with mixed teams. On a bright and sunny afternoon in a glorious setting, a most enjoyable game was produced in an excellent spirit with the result always in doubt until the last few ends. The visitors soon adapted to the fresh green and after nine ends had built up 31 - 40 aggregate lead with Royal skip and acting captain A. Jenkins with R. Evans, A. Weaver and R. Withers leading the way with a 8 - 15 advantage over the home rink of P. Wheeler. But anything can happen in the game of bowls! Over the next nine ends using the longer jack to their advantage, the hosts had reduced the score to 15 - 17 to finally run out 21 - 18 winners. Royal skip D. Hann and his rink of G. Morris, C. Patten and D. Morgan kept close tabs on Blaina's P. Roberts and his bowlers. They shared the spoils at 10 - 10 after 12 ends before pulling away with some fine bowling to gain a comfortable 12 - 24 victory. Likewise visiting skip J. Watkins and his rink found themselves 8 - 5 down after 9 ends against Blaina's R. Underwood before gaining five shots on the 11th end. This broke the resistence of the home bowlers who went down 15 - 21. The remaining two rinks were much tighter affairs with Royal skip J. Evans and his rink of J. Doyle, M. Patten and C. O'Brien holding a small advantage over S. Williams' bowlers with just one shot in it after 12 ends at 7 - 8 but the visitors kept up the pressure particularly over the last 3 ends to earn themselves a 11 - 18 success. Similarly the Royal's P. Cosh and his bowlers worked hard to gain a 2 shot lead at 10 - 12 after 12 ends against D. Cording before gaining a well earned 15 - 19 win. Although the Royal bowlers gained a 4 rinks to 1 victory and a 26 shot winning margin, the fine, competitive atmosphere on the green was a credit to both sides and provided valuable match experience at such an early opportunity at the start of the season.

Royal Success In Derby Cup Game - Weds. 23rd. April 2008

Rhymney Gwent B C   49  Rhymney Royal B C   64

Rhymney Royal retained the Ron Collins Cup with a solid 15 shot aggregate win against local rivals Rhymney Gwent at their shared green at the War Memorial Park. With the green bowling well and the evening getting chilly both sets of bowlers produced an interesting contest with a great deal of local pride at stake. Royal acting captain A. Jenkins and his rink of D. Morgan, C. Patten and K. R. Evans opened strongly against opposing captain and skip Mal Evans and his bowlers. They quickly built up a 2 - 7 lead only to see the home Gwent rink pull back to 7 - 7 at mid way. The remaining  ends were a much closer affair with the Royal bowlers holding on to gain a 11 - 13 advantage. Not so fortunate was the rink skippered by the Royal's D. Hann with T. Ryan, J. Barry and J. Doyle. They found the bowling of Gwent skip Dorian Duggan and his rink too powerful all round and slipped to a 19 - 8 reverse. The remaining two Royal rinks ran out convincing winners with Royal skip J. C. Evans and his rink of I. Prosser, W. Dearth and C. O'Brien bowling exceptionally well, building up steadily in a good controlled manner to gain a 21 - 14 win against Les Wooldridge and his bowlers. Likewise Royal skip P. Cosh with K. Bartlett, N. Protheroe and R. Withers proved too consistent for Malcolm Siddle's bowlers and ran out 5 - 22 winners. A 3 rinks to 1 success and a 15 shot aggregate winning margin gave the Royal bowlers immense pleasure and the right to hold the Ron Collins Challenge Cup for another year.

Friendly Win For Royal Bowlers - Saturday 19th. April.

 Rhymney Royal B C   66   New Tredegar B C   35

Rhymney Royal bowlers enjoyed an early season boost with this 31 shot victory over neighbours New Tredegar in this traditional opening friendly fixture of their 2008 campaign. With rain threatening and a cold wind swirling around the War Memorial Park, they were not the best conditions for an enjoyable game of bowls but both teams tried their best to make it as entertaining as possible. Rhymney Royal, with debutants father and son Ray and Julian Evans in their ranks, opened brightly with acting captain Adrian Jenkins skipping a rink of R. Evans, C. Patten and D. Morgan soon establishing themselves with a 11 - 2 lead after six ends against the visiting rink of Gary Lough. They extended this to 17 - 4 to finally win 24 - 4 after the game was shortened to 16 ends due to the deteriorating weather conditions. Last season's captain Peter Cosh with his rink of G. Morris, N. Protheroe and D. Lynch also built up an early lead at 6 - 1 against Brian Brown's bowlers. Although the visitors pulled back to 9 - 6 it was the home rink that ran out 18 - 7 victors with some accurate bowling in worsening conditions. The Royal rink skippered by D. Hann had their work cut out against Archie Holpin's bowlers. Although building up an early 6 - 2 lead, the visitors pulled back to 8 - 8 after 12 ends only to succumb to a single shot defeat at 10 - 9 in this truncated game. Debutant skip Julian Evans with I. Prosser, W. Dearth and C. O'Brien battled well against Gary Hook and his rink. Finding themselves 1 - 4 down after 3 ends, they stuck to their task and established a 14 - 9 advantage after 12 ends only to see victory snatched from them, again by a single shot, at 14 - 15 on the last end. Although the weather made bowling difficult, full credit must be given to all bowlers for making this friendly such an entertaining game.
